My Unconventional Path
Career in Education
I spent 15 years in education as an educator and administrator. After earning an M.F.A. in creative writing I began teaching writing. The most challenging accomplishment in my career was learning how to teach well.
My time in higher ed eventually led to administration where I spent a good amount of time learning how to lead through mentorship. Mentoring brought about a kind of reward that I had not experienced and did not expect.
Eventually, however, the winds in education began to shift which prompted me to reconsider the career path I was traveling.
Finding a New Direction
Admittedly, I was a bit lost about what to do to identify a new career. Luckily a colleague recommended the Highland Abilities Battery, which is aimed at identifying natural abilities. The assessment revealed that my strengths were in design and process.
While I had definitely embraced the power of process, I was a bit surprised to find that my natural abilities could be found in design.
Changing Course
Among the many things education can offer, I knew the best way to put the results of the Highland Skills Assessment to the test was an education. I enrolled in a Web Design program and knew by the end of my first week taking design courses that my life was going to change.
I loved design! Exploring design spoke to me in a way that my education in English and writing could not. The assessment was right and I had found my new path.
